Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD & TMJ) Can Be Successfully Treated with Acupuncture

It is estimated that over 10 million Americans and up to one-third of all adults will experience Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder (TMJ) in their lifetime.

The symptoms of this complex condition vary widely. They can be so distant from the temporomandibular region that this diagnosis is often overlooked.  TMD can result in jaw tenderness or pain, pain in the temporomandibular joints, ear pain, vertigo or dizziness, ringing in the ears, facial pain and weakness, locked or limited movement in the jaw, neck pain, shoulder pain, and headaches.

A number of very well-conducted studies have shown the effectiveness of acupuncture for addressing TMD and TMJ. In one, a 2007 British study, 85% of the patients with TMJ pain experienced at least 75% pain reduction from the acupuncture treatments.

Acupuncture can be used independently but is especially beneficial as a component in a comprehensive treatment plan with other specialists and procedures such as occlusal splints. Sensible adjunctive home therapies such as jaw stretching, acupressure, massage, and behavioral modifications are always valuable, both in maintaining and enhancing the benefit of the treatment protocol.

If you would like to try acupuncture I recommend an initial treatment trial to determine if it is an appropriate therapy for your condition. Give us a call today at (803) 256-1000 for an appointment or for a free consultation.
